What a Night! Celebrating 14 Years of Peculiarium Weirdness at Hangar 13
Hangar 13: The Old Portland You Miss—Alive and Bizarro as Ever.
Last Saturday night, Portland turned out to honor 14 years of pure, unfiltered Peculiarium weirdness—complete with clownery, sideshow thrills, a blue-hazed IPA, birthday cake and the kind of crowd only this town could summon. The air buzzed with curiosity and mischief as Hangar 13 played host to the Peculiarium’s 14th Birthday Bash and the release party for the all-new Peculiarium IPA, brewed with emberquats and chaos by the fine folks at Gigantic Brewing and Weird Portland United.

The party wasn’t just a celebration of the Peculiarium’s legacy—it was a bold kickoff for the future of Hangar 13.
This former industrial space in the heart of Slabtown is being reimagined as Portland’s new Third Place: a next-gen creative hub where artists, performers, and wild thinkers can gather, scheme, build, and play. From community-built films and storytelling nights to flea markets and freak shows, this is where Portland’s creative underground finds its stage.
The night delivered all the strange delights we hoped for, and then some.
The Live Action Sideshow lineup did not disappoint:
Excelsior Whipplebottom opened with heartfelt tomfoolery and carnival charm.
Steven Kage haunted the crowd with his shadowy Demon in a Top Hat séance-gone-wrong.
And The Celtic Oddity capped the night with jaw-dropping feats and dark circus grit.
Meanwhile, DJ Evel Steve spun classic radio oldies, giving the event that perfect glow of retro weird, like a drive-in movie that forgot to end.
Major thanks to Brian Kidd (aka The Unipiper), Ben Love of Gigantic Brewing, our incredible performers, and the entire Peculiarium crew for anchoring this wild, wonderful city in all its offbeat glory.
The Weirdtastic Beer Series is more than a lineup of limited-edition brews—it’s a living, fizzing tribute to Portland’s creative DNA. Born from the partnership between Gigantic Brewing and the nonprofit Weird Portland United, the series pours the city’s eccentric spirit into every pint, with a portion of sales supporting WPU’s mission to celebrate innovation, amplify artistic expression, and help incubate an even weirder future. From the Unipiper Hazy to Darcelle Blonde, each release tells a story—of beloved local icons, bizarre traditions, and the kind of creativity that makes Portland Portland.
Which brings us to the latest and arguably weirdest of the bunch: the Peculiarium IPA. Brewed in honor of the Peculiarium’s 14th anniversary, this color-shifting IPA harnesses the mythical Oregon emberquat, giving it a juicy, citrusy kick and a surreal blue haze that flirts with purple in the right light. It tastes like a Northwest forest got lost in a citrus grove. But what makes it truly special isn’t just the beer—it’s the mission. Every Weirdtastic brew is part fundraiser, part folklore, and 100% Portland: a love letter to the strange, the local, and the wonderfully offbeat corners of the city.
⚠️ WARNING: Word on the street is Gigantic is down to their last few cases of cans and kegs. Visit a local Gigantic while you can and grab a pint of Peculiarium IPA before the juice runs out.
And this Saturday, April 23rd at 11AM —bring your gloves and your vision, because it’s Demolition Day at Hangar 13.
At this month’s Spark the Build, we’re tearing down walls, opening up the space, and setting the stage for what this place is meant to become. This is the first remodeling phase—hands-on, dusty, and essential. Whether you're swinging a hammer or tossing out ideas, we want you there.
Located in Slabtown, Hangar 13 is more than a venue. It’s a forge for creative work, community events, underground films, and everything in between. It’s DIY with heart, design with soul, and art with a job to do. Show up at 11AM this Saturday or RSVP on FACEBOOK
But the weirdness doesn’t stop there.
👉 Mark your calendar: The Peculiarium Live Action Sideshow returns to Hangar 13 on Saturday, April 26 at 6:30PM, with a three-act bender of chaos, oddity, and delight. Costumes encouraged. Curiosity mandatory. $15 at the door.
